There are two things I can count on for Valentine’s Day: morning licks from my Yorkies and a beautiful bouquet of flowers from my Dad. That about sums up February 14th for me. No candlelight dinner or a dozen long-stemmed red roses. For a long time, this type of Valentine’s Day gave me a case of the blues. I wanted the romantic evening for two. I am wondering why I was ever sad though, because for more years than I can count, I’ve been part of a trio of true love with my friends Aubrey and Colleen.
You know these kinds of girlfriends. They are the ones who have been with you through the ups and downs of life. These are the gals you’ve laughed so hard with that you really might have peed in your pants. (This is a no judgment zone blog.) You have your own language, and sometimes one word is all it takes to crack you up. You’ve also cried on each other’s shoulders because these are you go-to girls when your heart is broken and you are wondering how you are going to get through the next five minutes, let alone the next day.
Where would we be without these friends? I am lucky to have more than a few of them in my life. Fortunately (or unfortunately in the case of some of my fashion and haircut choices), Colleen, Aubrey and I have chosen to document this friendship over the years in our famous “trio” photos. During these years, we have seen each other through boyfriends, breakups, and career changes. And we were together to celebrate Colleen’s marriage and we get to watch her beautiful boys grow up.
The best thing about having friends like this is knowing that you can always be yourself with them. There’s nothing you have to hide about yourself. They know pretty much everything about you, and it’s not that they love you anyway – that’s WHY they love you. And vice-versa. So when Valentine’s Day rolls around this year, I won’t be pining for my true love. I have already found two of them.
Wishing you a Happy Valentine’s Day filled with love and friendship!
